Widely acclaimed as one of New England’s premiere instrumentalists, David Surette is highly regarded for his work on the guitar, mandolin, and cittern. As a soloist, he is nationally known as a top player of Celtic fingerstyle guitar. Yet his diverse repertoire also includes original compositions, blues and ragtime, traditional American roots music, and folk music from a variety of traditions, all played with finesse, taste, and virtuosity. As part of a duo with his wife, singer Susie Burke, they have performed regularly together for 20 years, recording several albums and building a reputation as one of New England’s top folk duos. Surette was a founding member of the Airdance band with fiddler Rodney Miller, with whom he recorded four albums and toured nationally. He is also a highly sought-after accompanist.

Surette is an accomplished and gifted teacher who has taught at workshops and camps throughout the US, as well as in the UK. He is folk music co-ordinator at the Concord (NH) Community Music School, and artistic director of their March Mandolin Festival. He has authored a book of Celtic fingerstyle guitar arrangements for Mel Bay Publications, and is a regular contributor to Acoustic Guitar and Strings Magazine. In 1994, Surette was awarded a travel grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to study the traditional music of Brittany, and has published a collection of Breton folk tunes. He has been the recipient of an Individual Artist Fellowship award from the NH State Arts Council, and in the fall of 2008 was designated a Traditional Arts Master by the Maine Arts Comission.

Surette has released five solo recordings, as well as three duo albums with Susie Burke and a number of other collaborative recordings. His most recent solo CD release, Sun Dog, was one of the top 10 local releases for 2010 (“a stunning piece of work from a gifted guitarist”, Portsmouth Herald).

Autumn Dance Planned

An Autumn Dance will be held at the Landaff Town Hall on Saturday, October 23rd at 7:00 PM. Admission is $5.00 per person at the door. Entertaining with music for all ages will be the White Rose Band again this year.

There will be a “best pumpkin” contest so bring one or more to win a prize. Raffle tickets will be available to win several fine items and there will also be a 50-50. Cider and donuts (made locally) will be available for purchase.

Now that Old Home Day is safely in the rear view mirror, autumn is close on its heels. For the curious out there in blogsphere, the auction took in a little over $6,000. I'm not sure about the raffle and concession stand. The dinner netted around $1,100 that gets split between the Blue School and the fire department.

The most expensive item in the auction was the pie at $35o. Fireman Todd Breen won the coveted load of wood in the raffle.

Don't forget to come to the Landaff Old Home Day Auction and Supper this weekend! The auction starts at 9 a.m. and runs until at least noon. There's a concession stand, raffle tickets and all kinds of great stuff going on in the center of town.

Two Landaff treasures pass away

Word was received Tuesday that "Doc" Frederick Erb died after a period of declining health. Doc had his practice on Mill Brook Road right up until a few years ago. He held many town offices throughout his lifetime and will be sorely missed.

E. Norma Titus also died on Tuesday. She was the ultimate farmer's wife, although boasting that she had never set foot in her own barn. Norma was always up for a good conversation with neighbors. People she didn't even know would stop in to talk to her just because they had heard how interesting she was and that she knew all about town. Norma was well-known for scrapbooking before it came in vogue. If anyone missed a local news article, one would know that Norma would snag it for her books.

Elections and meetings coming up

There are a few contested elections for town offices in March.

Doug Erb is stepping (limping) down as selectman. Errol Peters and Ray Lobdell are vying for the chance to replace him.

Mary Beaudin is leaving her position on the school board after serving for 15 years. Beth (Towle) Miller-Clark and Tracy Tillotson are in a contest to take her spot.

Old Home Day success!

Over 110 bidders from as far away as Massachusetts and Manchester, participated in the successful Old Home Day auction. The fire department grossed over $8000. The dinner served around 120 people who enjoyed the home cooked specialties of citizens in town. Thanks to everyone who either prepared food or helped out or did both.

Old Home Day is this coming Saturday. Be sure to call soon for your dinner reservations. Consider yourself all set if call 838-6055 and you leave your name, which setting, and the number of adults and children who will be attending.

Mushroom lecture next week

On March 28^th at 2 PM at the Town Hall, the Landaff Conservation Commission will be hosting Roz Lowen who will give a presentation on wild mushrooms. Later on in the summer we will have her return to lead us on a field trip where we will identify edible and non-edible mushrooms. Everyone is welcome.

Pancake Breakfast

Let's go skiing

Quilt tickets on sale

The friends of Landaff are selling raffle tickets to win a spectacular log cabin design quilt donated and created by Jeanie McLaughlin, formerly of Landaff, now of Lincoln, NH. and Bradenton, FL. The quilt measures approximately five feet by seven feet. The tickets are $5.00 each with all proceeds to benefit various projects within the Landaff Town Hall. The winning ticket will be drawn at the Parker Hill Road concert scheduled for March 14, 2009 at the Landaff Town Hall. Winner need not be present to win. The Filing Period for Landaff Town Offices will open January 21 and close on January 30. Times to file will be Tuesday the 26^th from nine to eleven or from five to seven; or Friday the 30^th from three to five.

Openings for this year’s ballot are:

Select board, one seat, three year term.

Treasurer, one year term

Moderator, two year term.

Cemetery trustee, three year term.

Trust Fund Trustees, two seats, three year terms.

Planning Board, two seats, three year terms.

Zoning Board of Adjustment, two seats, three year terms

Conservation Commission, two seats, three year terms.

School Board, one seat, three year term

There will be a one dollar fee to file for any office for which compensation is paid.

Landaff cheese is being aged

Although it is not their final recipe, the Erbs have made two batches of cheese that have gone to be aged. Doug and Deb have been adjusting their creation to have just the right salt content in it. The cheese will be ready in 90 days. One batch went out around the first week in January. The second was a week later.

Right on! I feel the power once again and it is great. Just to let folks know how great Landaff is (or how much I smell?), I had offers of a hot shower from multiple households during the Great Power Outage of '08. It is great to turn a faucet and have hot water come out. AAAhhh! Thanks to everyone for your hospitality.

Homemade Christmas Wreaths for sale

The Heaths of King Hill Road have been busy as Santa's elves making upwards of 10 Christmas wreaths a day. Doug, Mike and Courtney have been gathering greens and snipping branches. Tammy and Doug have been assembling them. Lindsay has been putting her two cents worth about where to put the decorations. They come in small, medium and large and go for $12 to $20. Stop by the house at the top of the hill and get one of these beauties.

Tire warning

This is a message from Wendy Towle:

On 11/19/08, I was travelling at approx 30 mph when my passenger front tire bumped the curb. The tire "exploded"(according to the driver behind me)- and I could not steer the car- crashing head first into a cement based light pole. I was fine, no one else was involved- but the car was totaled. I had Bridgestone Turnza tires on the car(purchased new on 5/15/08)- and have since read multiple reviews with similar stories, of premature tread wear and even "spontaneous" combustion of these tires.

There was a class action lawsuit against Bridgestone for not recalling these tires- but apparently the case has been dismissed because although there are hundreds of similar complaints, no one can prove that the tire issues aren't related to other problems(over/under inflation, punctures from the road etc.)

SO PLEASE PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW THAT MIGHT HAVE THESE TIRES ON THEIR CARS- THEY ARE DANGEROUS!!!!!!!!!!!

Yoga takers?

Is anyone interested in exercising one day a week at the town hall? If we get enough interest it would be possible to get a yoga instructor to come to Landaff once a week or every two weeks.
