Let's give it some thought

-->

There is much discussion in town regarding the viability of the fire department.  With this talk, there has been just as much speculation that later turns to “fact”.  We recently heard the “fact” from one selectman and later repeated in a letter to the editor that the fire department is planning to build an extravagant fire station that will cost the taxpayers upwards of $800,000.
The fact is that the department has not been allowed to do any planning.  They have no building in mind; there are no plans; there is no design; there are no numbers; they have not even dug a test pit.  Some townspeople might be shocked to hear that no testing on the site happened after the town voted to allow it at last March’s town meeting. (It would have been done using money raised by the fire department at the auctions, not through taxes.) It didn’t happen because the selectman called the attorney general the day after the meeting to have her declare the testing illegal.  Rather than spend lots of money on lawyers, the fire department let the decision stand.
“Okay, so never mind that a fire station isn’t going to happen.  Let’s get rid of the fire department all together because they keep wanting stuff,” some people say.  People feel that we would be better off to just go with the Lisbon fire department.  Lisbon would love to see it happen, as they would get money from our town so that they can build their own fire station.
Landaff is part of the Twin State mutual aid system.  When a fire happens in town, Landaff fire fighters go to it along with adjoining towns according to the run card.  Conversely, if a fire or accident happens in another town, Landaff goes to provide support and equipment in that other town.  It is an important system that works well.
The fire department is an important part of our community.  They have done the auction at Old Home Day every year. They have paid for a band to play and have often been instrumental in the dinner.  The sense of community is the best part of our town.  The Old Home Day is always a time to connect with neighbors.  I have always been proud of this connection.  That whole thing will go away with shutting down the department.
Admittedly, there is an ebb and flow with the department.  Right now, they could use more fire department personnel.  That is not a reason to abolish the department.
This is a time for discussion, not a snap decision to shut down the department.  My wish is that the warrant article to get rid of the department gets defeated and a reasonable discussion begins, to address the concerns of the townspeople.  If, after a reasonable, fact-based discussion, the decision is to close it down, at least it would be an informed decision.

A Tale of Two Meetings

If you went to the school budget hearing on Monday night and the town budget hearing last night, then you saw the best and absolute worst things about our town of Landaff.
Monday’s meeting was run by school board chair Dale Locke.  He went through the budget respectfully and thoroughly while explaining each expenditure.  He did not skip any items.  He knew what he was talking about.  He answered all the questions.  At the end Dale repeated that if anyone had questions or thought of something later to ask, he would be happy to receive a phone call or email.  He was polite, patient, and respectful of the people in attendance in doing exactly what he is supposed to do as a school board chair.
Tuesday’s meeting was a different story.  The selectmen were surly, disrespectful and downright rude.  One selectmen even told a townsperson to shut up.  It was one of those situations where he was joking, not joking.  It was not okay or appropriate.  As they went through the budget, the selectmen highlighted what they wanted to highlight and passed over or attempted to pass over other items.  They even said, “We don’t want to talk about that.” Or, “Everybody knows about that, so we don’t need to talk about it.”
It was also quite clear that the board has no respect for the fire department.  They took the opportunity to push the narrative that maintaining the fire department is too expensive and undesirable. They have requested that all firemen go through an extensive background check, which includes financial records and employment records, in addition to the typical criminal record check.  This is invasive and unnecessary.  I believe it is harassment of the fire department.  The firemen do not have an issue with having a criminal background check, but what they are asking for is more than that.
The backroom politics need to stop.  If the selectmen requested a proposal from Lisbon, they should be upfront about it.  If the townspeople want to dissolve the fire department, it should happen after open, honest, and respectful discussion.
There is no place for innuendo about the character of the people on the fire department.  These people have willingly sacrificed much for the benefit of the town.  They have served the people of Landaff by spending hundreds (or in some cases thousands) of hours of their personal time with both training and actual fire fighting.  They are instrumental in Old Home Day each year, including paying for a band.  They get absolutely no compensation for their work.  These people have been willing to leave their homes and jobs at a moment’s notice to protect lives and property.  They deserve respect.

The two meetings could not have been more different.  We can disagree without disrespect. Let’s make it happen.

More house concerts

Greetings!

I trust everyone has been enjoying the summer months! We have been working hard here on the huge building project! It is far too fancy to call a barn and so we have decided to call it “the abbey.” When you see the main entry door, you will understand why. It is beautiful!

We have quite the line-up of house concerts for the next few months. Please mark your calendars. And take note that the October 20th concert featuring Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill requires advance payment. You may remember they were here in May of 2014 and we collected money in advance. The reason for this is that these amazing performers don’t normally do house concerts. But they took a chance on us and were extremely pleased (We were as well!) A guarantee is required and so it is necessary for us to have commitments from those who plan to reserve. Thanks for your understanding. This was a sell out performance last year, so be sure to reserve in advance and send a check ASAP. All of the details appear below.

Too much spam

I have started getting a bunch of spam for posts on this website, so if you comment, you will need to prove you are not a robot.  I know I don't post much but on the off chance that you want to comment to your fellow Landaffians, you'll need punch in some crazy numbers.

More house concerts in Landaff

From Brenda Adam:

Hi Everyone,

A few weeks ago I sent out a notice about the upcoming Ellis Paul house concert on Sunday March 17th. I tried something I had never tried before - to encourage people to commit to a reservation by paying in advance. The experiment has not worked out so I would like to revert to the usual way of doing this.....if you are interested in the Ellis Paul house concert, just reserve via email or by calling me at 603-823-7061. There is no need to purchase your tickets in advance. If you have already contacted me to reserve, there is no need to do so again. But I will definitely need more reservations for this concert to go forward. The potluck begins at 5:30 and the music starts at 7:00 p.m. Please contact me soon if you want to attend. $20.

Ellis Paul is as true as they come. Here is an excerpt from an interview with him:

The Day Everything Changed is a profound collection of songs but the title song is one that nearly everyone who listens to it can identify with.  Being at that crossroads and wondering which path to take...   Your song style is very conversational and undoubtedly your fans feel a closeness to you when they hear songs like this.  Is it fair to say that your fans have come to rely on you as a touchstone for many of life's big and even small events?
I just write 'em. And pray. I pray they feed my kids. Pray they pay my mortgage. Pray they're heard. Pray they Move somebody. Make toes wiggle. Tears fall. Lips hum. Minds open. Hearts expand. Pray people come to hear them in person. Pray they turn off American Idol and the Karrdashians.

Other important concert dates:
Thursday, March 7th at 7:00 p.m. at Northern Lights Music in Littleton: Guitarist Richard Smith, the 2001 National Fingerstyle Champion. At the age of 11, Richard Smith played with Chet Atkins onstage in London. "The most amazing guy I know on the guitar. He can play anything I know, only better." Chet Atkins. Contact NLM for reservations: 603-444-7776.

Sunday, March 17th at 7:00 p.m. (with  5:30 potluck) at my Easton house: troubadour Ellis Paul,  one of the leading voices in American songwriting.

Saturday, May 4th at 8:00 p.m. (with 6:30 potluck) at my Easton house: Guitarist Steve Kaufman, three time National Flatpicking Champion. (Steve will conduct a weekend long all level flatpicking guitar workshop at Northern Lights Music on Friday and Saturday. More information is attached.)

Sunday, October 20th: at my Easton House: straight from the UK, guitarist/singer/songwriter Sarah McQuaid. Sarah will be conducting two DADGAD guitar workshops earlier that day in my studio. There will be the usual potluck to follow and then a house concert. Details will be sent out later. If you are into alternate guitar tunings, these workshops are worth taking! Sarah has written an amazing book on DADGAD. I own the book and I took the workshops a year ago. She is amazing!

I know there is a lot of information in this email! Mark your calendars before you forget! And please contact me soon about Ellis Paul.

Thanks so much!

Brenda
